Since High on Life is still months away, Stranger’s Wrath will make the perfect appetizer, and players may be surprised to learn how many ideas the Oddworld series spawned that also appear in some of the most creative modern games. The following game software was reviewed on an Xbox Series X. It’s funny, smart, and mechanically diverse, and it offers a much-needed breather from the typical first-person shooter games on the market. With solid gameplay, Stranger’s Wrath offers players many options when taking out the bounties in the game. It also has an incredible twist toward the end. The story doesn’t have the narrative prowess of something like The Last of Us, but it has enough plot to keep players interested. Despite releasing almost three console generations ago, Stranger’s Wrath has aged extremely well. Stranger’s Wrath will almost assuredly scratch that comedic sci-fi shooter itch that those excited for High on Life might have. With all its similarities, Stranger’s Wrath may be the perfect game to pick up while waiting on High on Life. While all the Oddworld games are masterpieces worthy of playing in their own right, Stranger’s Wrath is perfect for fans of third-person shooters, first-person shooters, platformers, and action-adventure. Overall, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is a fantastic game. Both Stranger’s Wrath and High on Life have over-the-top character designs as well. While it’s unclear how satirical High on Life will be, several of Justin Roiland’s previous projects feature heavy satire. This is the exact kind of humor Justin Roiland is known for, and it looks like that is the type of humor that will be seen in High on Life. The Oddworld series is known for its satirical, sometimes crude, and adolescent humor. Each “round” of ammunition is also an AI programmed into the game to behave in a certain way, which isn’t totally different from the weapons used in High on Life. All the ammo for the crossbow in Stranger’s Wrath are real creatures that the player has to find and capture. While Stranger’s Wrath may not have weapons that talk to the player, the ammo the player uses in the game is very much alive. These weapons are almost playable characters themselves, and they are definitely important to the story. High on Life features guns that are alive - they’re actual creatures that can talk and have feelings. However, their connections run far deeper than those two similarities. Obviously, both games are first-person shooters set on alien planets, and both star main characters who are bounty hunters. Players control the titular Stranger, a bounty hunter who uses his crossbow filled with “live” ammo to hunt down criminals in order to pay for surgery. It follows a new character and switches from a platformer to a hybrid first-person shooter and third-person action game. It is the fourth installment in the Oddworld series, and it makes some radical changes to the established formula. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath was originally released for the Xbox in 2005, and it has since been ported to almost every console. Of course, the easiest comparison with High on Life is Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. The player has similar movement and platforming options as in Doom, and the enemy’s weapons fire actual projectiles, making the combat sections feel like a Bullet Hell game. The game pulls elements from other shooters, both first and third-person. It looks to blend first-person shooter gameplay and a sci-fi setting with the rich comedy and dialogue of Rick and Morty. The studio debuted an extended look at gameplay, story, and one of the game’s bosses at Gamescom 2022. High on Life is a new first-person shooter from Justin Roiland and his studio Squanch Games.
